In the meantime, Tichborne worked himself into a fury about Bahama grass. It had been planted years ago by Ballard, intended as a pretty border round the estate, but had proved rapacious and near impossible to eradicate. It dug itself in everywhere, spread rapidly, sucked the life out of the soil, killed off native species, and was altogether a blight upon the land.
